Short answer: hire a business with an active Oregon CCB license, a bond and liability insurance. 14 heating and cooling businesses are registered in Damascus and 155 across Clackamas County. Published 2026 Portland-metro ranges for a gas furnace replacement are $3,141–$6,281 (Angi) and $4,350–$7,750 (Costadia). The permit comes from Clackamas County for most addresses, since Damascus disincorporated; Happy Valley where an area was annexed to it. Heat out tonight? Start with the safety steps.
Who can repair or replace a furnace in Damascus?
Any business with an active Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license, a bond and liability insurance. In the state’s record, 14 heating, cooling and mechanical businesses are registered in Damascus, and 155 across Clackamas County. Registered city is where a license is held, not where a contractor works, so businesses in the neighbouring cities work in Damascus too.
- 14 heating, cooling, mechanical or sheet-metal businesses hold an active CCB license at a Damascus registered address.
- 4 of 14 have been licensed 10 years or more; the median is 4 years.
- 14 of 14 show both a bond amount and a liability-insurance amount on the state record.
- 0 of these licenses expire within 90 days of the state copy’s date (2026-09-13). If a contractor you are talking to is one of them, ask whether the license will be renewed before the job starts.

No heat right now? What to do tonight
Gas smell (rotten eggs or sulfur): leave the house, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off.
Carbon-monoxide alarm, or a yellow flame, or soot around the furnace: get everyone outside and call 911. Do not run the furnace again until it has been inspected.
Neither of those? Five minutes of checks fix a real share of no-heat calls: thermostat on HEAT with fresh batteries, the furnace power switch and breaker, a clogged filter, the door panel seated, and the blinking code on the control board. The furnace repair guide walks through each one.
Staying warm until someone comes: the CDC’s carbon-monoxide guidance is never to heat a home with a gas stove or oven, and never to run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors or in a garage.
Calling someone today: this site is not an emergency line and dispatches nobody. For same-day help, call a licensed contractor from the Damascus list directly, and ask the diagnostic fee before they come. For quotes on a repair or replacement that can wait a day, the quote form is pre-filled for you.
What does furnace replacement cost in Damascus?
No published source gives a Damascus-only figure, so these are the Portland-metro ranges for a gas furnace replacement: Angi puts it at $3,141–$6,281 (average $4,711), and Costadia’s 2026 Portland guide says $4,350–$7,750. A like-for-like swap into adequate ducts with easy access sits at the low end; venting changes for a condensing furnace, duct work, electrical work and a tight crawlspace move it up. The full cost table, heat pumps included, is here.
This site has no published repair-price range it can verify for the area, so it gives none. What it can say: ask the diagnostic fee first, ask whether it is credited against the repair, and get the repair price before the work starts.
Rebates on a gas furnace are narrow. Energy Trust of Oregon’s 2026 Oregon sheet lists $1,600 for a 95% AFUE or better furnace that is the home’s primary heat, but only for a single-family rental, an attached home or an income-qualified household, and only where the gas comes from NW Natural, Cascade or Avista. It lists no gas-furnace incentive for an owner-occupied detached house. The federal 25C credit ended for equipment installed after 31 December 2025. The rebate page has the detail and a three-question checker.
Who issues the furnace permit in Damascus?
Damascus voted to disincorporate in 2016 and does not appear in Clackamas County’s table of cities that issue their own permits. The county says it issues every type of building permit for unincorporated areas (503-742-4240). Areas annexed to Happy Valley are the exception; there the city issues it. Confirm by address before work starts.
Ask every contractor who quotes: who pulls the permit, and is it in this price? Permitted work is inspected work. If the answer is “we don’t usually,” that is the answer.
What should you check before hiring a furnace contractor in Damascus?
- The CCB license is active. Ask for the number and check it, or check it at the CCB’s own search. It must also appear on the contractor’s bid and contract.
- A bond and liability insurance are on the record. They are not the same thing: the bond is a limited amount (for most residential contractors $20,000–25,000) shared across every claim against the business; liability insurance covers damage to your property. Neither guarantees the work.
- The license is not about to lapse. The lookup shows the expiry date.
- The equipment is named exactly: manufacturer, model number and AFUE in writing, so quotes can be compared like for like.
- The price is the total installed price: permit, venting, duct changes, electrical and haul-away included, not a price after a rebate you may not qualify for.
Does Oregon require a heat pump when you replace a furnace?
Not for a replacement. Section N1105.8 of the 2026 Oregon Residential Specialty Code applies to new dwellings where split-system air-conditioning is installed, and the Building Codes Division’s own summary says it “does not apply to the replacement (alteration) of an existing cooling system.” A heat pump may still be the right choice; it should be yours. The code language is here, and the furnace replacement guide covers what a proper install includes.
What is specific to Damascus
Damascus blends rural and suburban living on larger lots, and homes here run on everything from natural gas and propane to all-electric systems. Bigger, more spread-out houses make sizing matter more: an undersized system never keeps up and an oversized one short-cycles. For a home off the gas main and heated electrically, the Energy Trust heat-pump incentives may actually apply — the electric-heat condition that rules out most gas-furnace homes is the one Damascus homes are more likely to meet.

Every heating and cooling business registered in Damascus, from the State of Oregon’s CCB Active Licenses dataset (g77e-6bhs), filtered to businesses whose registered name indicates heating, cooling, mechanical, refrigeration or sheet-metal work. A general contractor who also installs furnaces will not appear here even though licensed. This is a copy of a public record, not a recommendation, and no company pays to appear in it.

Sources and how this page was researched
Who: written and checked by Mark Griffin for Direct-Me LLC, the publisher. Neither is an HVAC contractor or technician, and nothing here comes from inspecting anyone’s equipment. What the page adds is the primary documents, read and dated:
- Licensed contractors: the State of Oregon’s CCB Active Licenses open data (data.oregon.gov, dataset g77e-6bhs), state copy dated 13 September 2026, pulled 23 September 2026, filtered to 1,042 heating, cooling, mechanical, refrigeration and sheet-metal businesses. Every count on this page is computed from that file when the site is built; none is typed in by hand. A general contractor who also installs furnaces will not be in the filter.
- Costs: Angi (Portland) and Costadia (Portland, 2026), verified 23 September 2026. No source publishes a town-level figure and no repair-price range could be verified, so this page gives none.
- Incentives: Energy Trust of Oregon information sheet PI 0320I v2026.5 (revised 9 September 2026), Oregon section, re-read 29 September 2026; IRS guidance on Public Law 119-21 for the end of the 25C credit.
- Code: Oregon Building Codes Division, First-Stage Heat Pump — 2026 ORSC Provisions Summary, quoted verbatim, read 23 September 2026. Its effective date has not been re-confirmed since; call the Building Codes Division (503-378-4133) if a date matters to your project.
- Permits: Clackamas County Building Codes Division (clackamas.us/building), read 7 October 2026. That Damascus disincorporated in 2016 is stated from general knowledge, not from a document re-read for this page, so confirm the permit office by address.
- No-heat safety: the standard CDC carbon-monoxide prevention advice, cited by name (the CDC page was not re-fetched for this update). The gas-smell and CO-alarm steps are the standard leave-first, call-from-outside advice, not taken from a document re-read for this update.
No contractor, manufacturer or program pays to appear or to be mentioned. Found an error? Send it with the source; the page is corrected and re-dated.
